The church of St Demetre serves Apnia village. Demetre is the Georgian form of the name Demetrius, and the dedication is uncommon in Javakheti.
Apnia stands in the south of Akhalkalaki Municipality and is among the few villages of the area with a Georgian community. Open highland surrounds it, windy and snowy in winter.
