The Surb Gevorg church belongs to the Armenian Apostolic Church. Surb Gevorg is the Armenian name of Saint George, and churches with this dedication are numerous in Javakheti.
Akhalkalaki Municipality lies on the Javakheti plateau, and the overwhelming majority of its residents are Armenian, so Armenian parishes are the main ones here. The nearest marked church, in the village of Kotelia, is about four kilometres away. The plateau is high and treeless, with a long winter.
A headscarf is useful for women, as it may be required at the entrance. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Allow no more than half an hour for the visit.
- Bring water, as there are no kiosks nearby.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
