Martvili Canyon, Samegrelo-Upper Svaneti, Georgia

The Martvili Canyon is a magnificent creation of nature, located in the picturesque village of Gachedili, in the heart of the Martvili municipality, in the Samegrelo region. This canyon, located at an altitude of 210 meters above sea level, embodies the grandeur and beauty of the mountainous nature of Georgia.

In its majestic beauty, the gorge is carved by the Abasha River into the form of an impressive canyon, carved from limestone rocks against the backdrop of an anticlinal fold. Its length reaches 2400 meters, the cutting depth varies from 20 to 30 meters, and the width of the gorge ranges from 5 to 10 meters. Throughout the canyon there are small waterfalls that create a magical atmosphere, and a place called Oputskhole, where, as legends say, the Dadiani princes swam, makes a special impression.

For the convenience of visitors, a 700-meter-long stone circular path was created, starting at the visitor center and crossing the historical Dadiani Trail. Along this route there are two bridges, three observation decks and a historic 30-step staircase made of massive limestone boulders.

For those who want to plunge into the magical atmosphere of the canyon even deeper, there is the opportunity to rent a boat and walk a 300-meter section of the Abasha River, enjoying amazing views of the canyon. However, it is worth remembering that to avoid danger, access to the boat area is closed in rain and snow when the water level rises.

Martvili Canyon is attractive all year round, but is especially captivating from April to October, when the tourist season is active. This place is definitely worth a visit for everyone who appreciates the beauty of wild nature and the historical heritage of Georgia.
