  • Description

The Architectural and Archaeological Museum of Nokalakevi was founded in 1988 on the territory of the ancient city of Tsikhe Goji, formed in the III century AD by the Georgian Prince Kuji to protect Egrisi.

The fortress was the most important place of battles between Persia and Byzantium, it withstood two sieges and lost its former greatness only in the XVIII century. In the 1930s, the site of the fortress was investigated by archaeologists led by Academician Javakhishvili, through excavations the ruins of a Byzantine church, a princely house, a temple, a bathhouse, an ancient tunnel and various structures were discovered.

The museum exhibition contains exhibits dating from the period of the VIII century BC – XVIII century AD. Among the rich collection of ethnographic materials, it is worth paying attention to ceramics and clay products, gold coins, pyramid scales, gold and bronze jewelry, wooden tableware, iron tools and military weapons.
