  • Description

The Georgian fortress of Rukhi, rising majestically in the Samegrelo region, is an integral part of the rich historical heritage. Built in 1647 by Levan II Dadiani, it became an impregnable fortification of the principality, effectively protecting the territory from Ottoman invasions.

Located in the village of Ruhi, the fortress served not only a military purpose, but also stimulated trade in the region, and also provided a bulwark against Ottoman influence. The history of the castle is steeped in epics and events, such as the siege in 1672, when Prince Levan III Dadiani was able to hold the fortress despite the Ottoman siege.

However, despite the importance of historical events, Ruhi Fortress inevitably faced difficult times. In 1725 it was destroyed by Ottoman troops, but thanks to persistent efforts it was restored. In 1769, during the Russian-Turkish War, General Totleben and the Georgian kings regained control of the fortress, ousting the Ottomans.

The architecturally beautiful Ruhi Castle is an impressive combination of grandeur and loss. With its maximum internal length of 100 meters and width of 80 meters, it includes the lower part in the south and the citadel in the north. The towers guarding the castle, and especially the main tower of the citadel, provide stunning views of the Enguri River and the river basin.

Today, the Rukhi fortress, despite the loss of its military significance at the beginning of the 19th century, invites visitors on a fascinating journey into the past. Four surviving floors and part of the fifth, embrasures, fireplaces and magnificent views make this a wonderful place for history and architecture lovers. Plunging into the spirit of ancient times, visitors will be able to feel the grandeur and inaccessibility of the Rukha fortress, which has witnessed many historical vicissitudes.
