The church is dedicated to St. Elisha; it is also referred to as a church of the prophet Elijah bearing the name Mochokhi. Elisha and Elijah are directly linked in church tradition, Elisha having been the disciple of Elijah, and in mountain villages their names were often set side by side.
Shkmeri lies high in the mountains above Oni, at the foot of the ridge where the forest ends and the alpine meadows begin. The parish of St. Nino of the same village stands about six hundred metres away, and there are no other neighbours nearby. Oni is about ten kilometres off, Ambrolauri twenty two.
The road here climbs in hairpins and the pass closes with snow in winter, so the warmer months are the better time to come. The church is a village one and services are not held every day. Dress modestly, keep quiet inside, leave offerings untouched. In summer walking routes come up here and the village grows livelier.
