The church is dedicated to the Saviour, Matskhovari in Georgian. In the mountains such a dedication is rarer than one to St. George, and it usually belonged to the chief churches of villages standing on the old pass routes.
Ghebi lies in the upper Rioni, at the foot of the main Caucasus range, twenty one kilometres from Oni. For centuries the paths across the passes to Svaneti and to the north ran from here, and the village was held to be one of the most considerable in upper Racha. The church of Tevresho stands about four kilometres away, the church of Chiora four and a half.
The road here is seasonal: in winter snow closes the uplands, in spring meltwater washes it out, and the summer months are the best time. The church is in use, though services are not held every day. Dress modestly, keep quiet inside, leave offerings untouched.
