  • Description

The Georgian fortress of Zubi, majestically located in Lechkhumi, in the village of Zubi, appears before us as a historical fortress with a rich strategic and cultural history. Its position on a cape surrounded by mighty mountains gives the impression of an impregnable guard of a majestic valley.

Based on ancient chronicles, the Zubi Fortress is associated with “Kartlis Tskhovreba” (“Life of Kartli”), where the Takveri Fortress is mentioned. This fortress, according to Vakhushti Batonishvili, stood at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains, on the banks of the Tskhenistskali River. Perhaps it was one of the residences of the Takveri eristavis, ancient Georgian feudal lords.

In the 17th century, the Zubi Fortress became part of a historical gift when Grigol Tsagereli transferred its ownership to the Khvaml Church of St. George. The fortress represents the splendor of the art of defense, having only one entrance, protected from the east, while the river surrounds it on the other three sides.

A tour of the Zubi Fortress immerses you in its architectural heritage. The lower fortress is located along the slope in terraces surrounded by a stone fence and trench, while the rectangular second terrace is supported by a massive wall of stone blocks. At the highest point, on the third terrace, rises a rectangular citadel, fortified with semicircular and round supports, and its heart is represented by a quadrangular tower.

Zubi represents two construction periods, which indicates its reinterpretation in the late Middle Ages. Here, among the centuries-old walls, you can touch the richness of history, feel the spirit of antiquity and feel the grandeur of Georgian defensive architecture.

For those who appreciate history and architectural heritage, a visit to the Zubi Fortress will be a unique guide to ancient times. Here, on top of a towering cape, you can enjoy majestic views of the surrounding nature and feel part of Georgia's rich cultural heritage.
