The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, one of the most widespread dedications in Georgia: the feast known here as Mariamoba is kept across the country at the end of August.
The church stands in Dzegvi, close to the water. Eighty metres away rises the church of Tsikhedidi, and its name translates literally: tsikhe means fortress, didi means big. The village also holds the village church, a church of the Virgin and the church of George Mtatsmindeli, while the church of St. Tevdore stands three kilometres up the valley. Mtskheta is about eight kilometres away.
The church is in use and stands in plain view, so it is easier to enter than the remoter village churches. The usual rules apply: modest dress, a headscarf for women, quiet inside. On Mariamoba the place can be crowded.
