Delpinis Khati is a shrine in Zenubani, a mountain village west of the Zhinvali reservoir. A khati in the tradition of eastern Georgia is a village shrine, the centre of communal feasts, vows and oaths, around which the life of a mountain village was built for centuries.
Information on Delpinis Khati itself is scarce, and it is more honest to admit it: the place continues a tradition still kept in Mtianeti, Pshavi and Khevsureti. The road to Zenubani over mountain hairpins justifies the trip by itself for lovers of untouristed Georgia: gorges, bends and villages where a guest still causes surprise.
A khati is treated with special respect: one does not approach the shrine itself without the leave of locals, offerings are not touched, and quiet is kept. The tradition is best watched from aside, as a guest.
