The church of St. George stands in Chokhi. The place is also referred to as the new church: in mountain villages old churches were often renewed or rebuilt on the same spot, and such a description usually points to that.
Chokhi lies high in the mountains above Pasanauri, away from the Georgian Military Road. The nearest shrine, Pirimze, stands about seven hundred metres off and is known as a khati, a revered mountain site. There are no other neighbours nearby: the gorges here are deep and the villages few. Pasanauri is about twelve kilometres away.
The road is a mountain one and the passes close with snow in winter, so the warmer months are the better time to come. The church is in use: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet inside. In mountain churches offerings left by others are not touched.
