The shrine of St George at Akhatani is known by the name Sharao. What the word means is not explained here, and it has stayed with the place on its own.
The shrine stands far from the Kviratskhoveli church of the same village, three and a half kilometres away: the name Akhatani covers several localities. The Davati churches turn out to be closer, the village church and the prayer niche beside it, both about two and a half kilometres off.
The site is open, there are no gates, and you can come at any hour. The rules are those of any church: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet. The candles and what others have left by the walls are better left untouched.
