The church of St Lazarus stands in Sartichala. Lazarus, whom Christ raised on the fourth day, is remembered before Easter, on Lazarus Saturday, and the dedication is an uncommon one in Georgian villages.
Sartichala lies in Kvemo Kartli, right on the boundary with Kakheti, on the road from Tbilisi to the Kakhetian towns. Another church of the village, of the Archangels, stands about a kilometre and a half away, and the churches of Khashmi are four and five kilometres off.
The village is large and lies on a through road, so it is easiest to call in on the way. The gates of village churches are not always open, so if getting inside matters, ask the neighbours. The usual rules hold here too: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet.
