📍 Coords and Plus Code

The church of St Marine stands in Marabda, north of Marneuli. The parish here is a living one, the church is well kept, and everyone in the village knows it.

Marabda lies on the plain by the railway that links Tbilisi with Marneuli and on to the south. The village is known for something else as well: in the seventeenth century the battle of Marabda was fought nearby, one of the great battles of Georgian history.

There are no regular services, and visits are arranged with local people. The usual etiquette applies: covered shoulders and knees, quiet inside.

This site is said to be the final resting place of the nine Kherkheulidze brothers, their sister, and their mother, who were reportedly killed fighting against Shah Abas I during the battle of Marabda. This story holds great importance for Georgians, similar to the Battle of the Alamo. You can find symbolic graves and memorials for the soldiers, as well as the actual graves, in the churchyard.

The church looks nice from the outside, but unfortunately, there are no frescos left inside. If you find the door locked, you can call the number posted on it. We spoke with the local priest, who kindly sent the village head with the keys. He handed us the keys and instructed us to close the door and leave them at the entrance. The locals were very friendly. The road leading to the church is paved, making it easy to reach by car.

If you're willing to navigate around some cow dung, you can enjoy lovely views by following the small path on the left side of the church.
