  • Description

In eastern Georgia, intertwined with centuries of history, the Kveshi Fortress flaunts the impregnable beauty. This medieval castle, perched on a high cliff, holds its ancient walls on the left bank of the Mashavera River in Kvemo Kartli. The castle, like a guard, controlled the ancient roads, heading from Samshvilde to Tashir and Zurtaket - Javakheti.

The history of the Kveshi Fortress dates back to the 7th century, and in its formation, it survived numerous owners and important events. Noted in the "Armenian Geography" in the 9th century, the castle underwent changes in status after the urbanization of Dmanisi. But the real drama began at the end of the 12th century, when Queen Tamar handed over the Fortress of Kweshi in support of her loyal Torel family. From this point on, the castle witnessed uprisings, battles and movements of owners, from Javakhishvili to Baratashvili, until Russian ownership at the beginning of the 19th century.

In its golden era, at the end of the 16th century, the Kveshi Fortress was chosen as the main residence of the King of Kartli, and in the 17th-18th centuries, it became the key point of Orbeliani. Over the centuries, its walls have witnessed important historical moments, and its territory has been home to the Georgian population. However, at the end of the 18th century, along with the collapse of Kvemo Kartli, the castle was destroyed.

Today, the Kveshi Fortress remains the personification of historical greatness. The ruins of the castle, recreated in the imagination, tell a fascinating story of time and passions. Visitors who set foot on this land feel the grandeur of the past and the mystery of antiquity. The Kveshi fortress is not just stone walls, but a living chronicle, inviting you to immerse yourself in the castle of antiquity and meet the ghosts of time. The diversity of cultural influences reflected within the castle walls makes this a must-see for those seeking to understand the soul of Georgia through the prism of its history.

We invite all historical enthusiasts and those who want to feel the pulse of time to visit the Kveshi Fortress. In this place, embedded in every stone are not only centuries of the past, but also resurrected historical dramas that are waiting to be revealed.
