  • Description

In a picturesque corner of Kvemo Kartli, next to the small village of Chapala, there is a fortress, which is like a guardian of the beautiful rivers Mashavera and Bolnisi Tskali. It’s easy to get to – only 2-3 km from their confluence.

Chapala Castle, built in an open clearing, rises on a mighty rocky ridge. According to historical documents from 1664, this castle was presented to Elizbar Sologashvili by Vakhtang V. In 1749, the castle acquired its new owner - Dmitry Orbeliani. The upper castle has survived to this day, guarding the courtyard and the remains of various buildings. Archaeological excavations have revealed interesting facts: the ruins of houses and a reservoir (XI-XIII centuries) are part of the rich history of this place. At the foot of the castle you will find ancient wooden buildings and the ruins of two ancient churches.

No less impressive is the 17th-century stone arch bridge, which rises on the Mashavere River. Its architectural beauty and age-old durability make it an integral part of the surrounding landscape.

Why is it worth visiting Chapala Castle?

Chapala Castle is not just a historical place, but a real gateway to the past.
