This church calls for two caveats at once, both about a coincidence of names. It is called Svetitskhoveli, but the famous Svetitskhoveli cathedral, the principal shrine of Georgia, stands in Mtskheta and has no connection with this village church in Kvemo Bodbe. The church is also known as one of the Twelve Apostles: both names are in use.
The second caveat concerns the village name. Kvemo Bodbe echoes Bodbe monastery, the resting place of Saint Nino, but the monastery stands higher up the slope near Sighnaghi and is likewise a different site. The village lies south of the town, and above it, in Zemo Bodbe, stands a church of the Nativity of the Virgin.
The church is open from morning to evening, so you can call in at almost any hour of the day. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
