A male monastic house, one of the few in this part of Imereti. In Georgian it is called mamata monasteri: mama here means father in the monastic sense, so the phrase translates as the house of the fathers. To whom it is dedicated has not survived.
Dzmuisi lies in mountainous Imereti, on a slope above the valley, and the climb to the village runs along a mountain road. The case here is a rare one: a monastic house and parish churches sit side by side in one village, whereas houses were usually placed away from dwellings. Besides the house Dzmuisi has a church of Saint George and a holy place in the Kisoreti quarter. The century of foundation is not established.
The house is in use: covering clothing, a headscarf and skirt for women, voices kept low. Plan the visit for daylight hours, as monastic life keeps its own order.
