  • Description

In the very heart of the Imereti region, in the village of Tolebi, stands the mighty Telefisi fortress, whose roots go back to the 6th century. This ancient fortress, which became a witness to battles and a strategic point, rises above the valley of the Rioni River, attracting attention with its majestic architecture.

In 553, during the Great Egrisi War, an epic battle broke out here between the Egri - Byzantine and Iranian armies. Recreating historical events, the Byzantine chronicler Agatha Scholasticus describes the commander Martin, who occupied Telefisi with his infantry, considering it “a strong and very solid castle, guarding the entrances with great zeal in this difficult place.”

The traces of time led us to the small ruins that remained of this magnificent structure. The western wall, rising 20-25 meters in height and having a thickness of 3.6 meters, together with fragments of the eastern wall, speak of the unshakable strength and grandeur of the Telefisi fortress.

This historical artifact belonged to Prince Chiladze until the 17th century, after which it came into the possession of Dadiani-Chikovani. Today the fortress leaves impressive memories in the form of deep fragments of collapsed walls scattered on the hill.

We invite everyone who appreciates the greatness of history to go to this amazing hill and feel the breath of antiquity in every stone of the Telefisi fortress. Admire the splendor of the past and enjoy the incredible views of the Rioni Valley from this elevated position.
