  • Description

The treasure of the Middle Ages in the heart of Abkhazia is the Likhny Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Rising sternly in the village of Likhny in the Gudauta region, this architectural gem dates back to the 10th century. Despite the occupation of the territory by the Russian Federation, this temple has not lost its historical significance and grandeur.

The majestic walls of the church contain numerous inscriptions mentioning the great rulers of Georgia, including Bagrat IV and George II. However, the most notable is the record of the appearance of Halley's comet in 1066, which does not leave any visitor indifferent.

The temple, built in the shape of a cross with a dome, is framed by three apses on the eastern side, and its architecture personifies ancient beauty and grandeur. The interior is decorated with two layers of wall paintings - from the 12th to the 14th centuries, each of which attracts the eye with its bright colors and expressive subjects.

Despite the difficulties facing its preservation, the Likhno Church continues to attract art and history lovers. Such an important place for Georgian culture deserves attention and interest, especially among those who seek to understand and appreciate the ancient history of this amazing country.
