  • Description

In the depths of Abkhazia, in the secluded village of Bzipi (or as it is also called - Bzyb), the majestic Bzipi Church is located. This architectural masterpiece, which dates back to the second half of the 9th century, is an integral part of the historical complex of the Bzip Fortress. The church impresses with its beauty and centuries-old history.

Built in the shape of a cross with a dome, the temple has three entrances - from the south, west and north, each of which is majestically decorated with porches. Inside, the altar, raised on three steps, is surrounded by utility rooms - a deacon and an altar. The apses crowning each of the rooms give the church a special charm.

However, time has not been kind to this historical monument: the dome, vaults, arches collapsed, and part of the facing stone crumbled. All this only emphasizes the greatness of the history that envelops this shrine.

No less impressive is the fortress itself, divided into two parts: in the upper part there is a temple, and in the courtyard of the lower part there was an ancient road. The walls of the fortress, rising in limestone squares, are fortified with towers and gates, representing a unique example of medieval architecture.

Having visited this place, you will plunge into the mystical atmosphere of antiquity, feel the breath of centuries and feel a connection with the rich history of this land. Bzip Church and Fortress invite you on a unique journey into the past to understand and experience the greatness of ancient times.
