  • Description

In the depths of Abkhazia, between the picturesque mountains, the Bedi Monastery is located - a historical sanctuary that mysteriously brings together ancient legends and modern reality. Hidden in the village of Bedia in the Ochamchire municipality, this architectural ensemble was founded back in 999 by Bagrat III, the first king of united Georgia.

According to the chronicles of the Dadiani family, initially a church erected by Bagrat III himself stood on this site. Although the original structure has not survived, traces of it were discovered in 1968 by L. Khimshiashvili, during restoration work. Today's Bedia Temple, recreated on the basis of the remains of an old building, dates back to the second half of the 13th century. Its interior is decorated with reliefs that preserve the spirit of the history and culture of ancient Georgia.

The majestic complex of the monastery includes not only a domed church, but also the episcopal residence, bell tower and gates, personifying centuries-old history and traditions. An integral part of the architectural ensemble was a fence created from piles of flat stone, which are now, unfortunately, lost.

Bedia Temple, which is the central building of the monastery complex, amazes with its elegant architecture. Its three entrances, numerous apses and choirs, and the lost dome all reflect the grandeur of ancient Georgian religious architecture. Although temporary upheavals and restorations may have slightly altered its original appearance, the uniqueness and grandeur of the Bedia Monastery remains magnificent.

The Bishop's Palace, standing next to the temple, served not only as a home, but also as a symbol of power and influence. Today its ruins remind of the nobility and beauty of ancient times, when great figures and restorers lived here.

And finally, the bell tower-gate, rising on the western part of the complex, welcomes and forgives every guest, ringing its bells, as if reminding of the eternity of time and spirituality.

Bedia Monastery is not just a historical landmark, it is a place where time stops to look at the grandeur and beauty of the past. Its amazing architecture, enriched with religious and cultural treasures, invites every traveler to meet the history and mysteries of Georgia.
