Open Air Museum of Ethnography
The open air museum of folk architecture and everyday life was founded in 1966 by the ethnographer Giorgi Chitaia. It covers a hill above the Vake district next to Turtle Lake and brings together around seventy houses and buildings from every part of Georgia. The gallery shows a Svan tower above the city, an eastern Georgian darbazi house with a carved central pillar, wooden oda houses of western Georgia on brick piers, stone farmhouses with old cart wheels, an ancient basilica, a dolmen in the woods and the monument to Chitaia. Interiors show daily life: a hearth with a cauldron, clay jugs, wooden churns, a tahta bench with kilims, a cradle and a khurjin saddlebag.
