The country's leadership will financially support those who purchase alternative energy sources
According to experts' forecasts, in ten years the electricity consumption in the country will approach 22 billion kilowatt-hours, which is almost twice the current figure. Thus, in the near future, Georgian citizens may find themselves in a situation of serious energy shortage.
In order to prevent such a development of events, the government intends to use renewable resources to the maximum extent possible.
According to official data of the Ministry of Agriculture, residents of settlements will be able to receive monetary compensation for the installation of alternative food sources on their plots. Grants will be issued within the framework of the expanded "Rural Development Program", with financial support from the United Nations and the European Union.
At the first stage of the project, five and a half million lari will be invested in the Georgian and Adjara territories (Tetri-Tskaro, Borjomi, Lagodekhi, Khulo, Akhalkalaki, Keda, Dedoplis-Tskaro and Stepantsminde). The authorities promise that the list of districts participating in the project will grow.
For the purchase and installation of a water heater or heater powered by solar energy, a cash payment covering 90% of the purchase price, but not more than ₾1,000, will be available to the local population.
When carrying out work on the thermal insulation of the house, residents of the districts can count on co-financing from 60 to 70 percent (₾8-12 thousand), depending on the area of work.
When buying a vacuum water heater, the grant amount will be 80%, but will not exceed 3 thousand lari.
