Innovations in transportation: Georgia has been adopting reforms in the field of motor transport since January 1

From the beginning of next year, significant changes in the field of road transport will come into force in Georgia. The Parliament of Georgia has approved amendments to legislation that involve the introduction of reforms in intercity passenger and freight transportation.

According to the innovations, transportation permits will be issued without holding tenders, and their issuance will be regulated by a special decree of the Government of Georgia. Now drivers will need a special permit to carry out transportation, and only persons acting on its basis will be considered carriers.

The amendments also introduce three types of permits: for passenger transportation, for international freight transportation and for international freight transportation above the quota for foreign carriers. Permissions can be either single-use or reusable.

The concept of a "bus station" is being created in Georgian legislation. This is a place arranged in accordance with technical requirements, designed for the transportation of passengers. Each bus station will have its own certificate confirming its compliance with technical standards and class. Bus stations will be divided into three classes, which determine their functionality and degree of accreditation.

The first class allows for both international and intercity and regional passenger transportation. The second class will be limited to domestic transportation, and the possibility of international flights will be provided in the absence of the first class. The third class allows only intra-district transportation, with the possibility of intercity and international flights in the absence of first and second class bus stations or their insufficient capacity.

These changes are aimed at more efficient management of the road transport sector and improving the quality of services provided.
