The museum is dedicated to the conductor Alexander Melik-Pashayev and works inside the national library of Shahumian village. The format is intimate, a memorial space within the library: photographs, documents and objects connected with the name of the musician. The library staff show the collection.
Shahumian lies in the Marneuli municipality of Kvemo Kartli, not far from the Armenian border. It is a village with a mostly Armenian population, and the museum belongs to local cultural life rather than to a tourist route. Around it are the plain, orchards and country roads.
The library works on weekdays in the first half of the day, so a morning visit is the easier plan. The visit takes fifteen to twenty minutes. Coming here on purpose is a long drive, so it is more sensible to fold it into a wider Kvemo Kartli route.
Tips
- Come on a weekday, the library may be closed at the weekend
- Ask the librarian, they are usually the one who shows the collection
- Combine the trip with Dmanisi or Bolnisi, they lie the same way
How to get there
- South west from Marneuli along the local road, about half an hour by car
- Roughly an hour and a half from Tbilisi via Marneuli
