The church dedicated to Saint George stands in Kvareli itself, within the town. Saint George is the principal saint of Kakheti, and more churches carry his name than any other.
Kvareli is the centre of a municipality on the left bank of the Alazani, right at the foot of the Caucasus range. The town is known for wine cellars cut into rock and for a lake nearby, and as the birthplace of Ilia Chavchavadze. A small Avar community of about a thousand people also lives in the municipality.
Modest clothing is expected, with shoulders and knees covered. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
