The Eliosidze House is an excavated dwelling in the royal quarter of Gremi, presented as an archaeological site. It shows the layout of a town household in the time of the Kakhetian kingdom: the walls, the rooms, the working part and the objects found during the digs. This format is rare, since vanished towns usually leave only fortresses and churches behind.
The site lies a few hundred metres from the Gremi citadel, in the part of the settlement where the residential quarter stood. Around it are the Alazani valley and the vineyards of the Kvareli district. The two Gremi sites are within walking distance of each other.
Allow half an hour here, and about an hour and a half together with the settlement museum and the citadel. Mornings are easier. The site is open ground, so bring water and a hat in the heat.
Tips
- See it together with the settlement museum, they complete each other
- Bring water, there is almost no shade on the dig
- Come in the morning or towards evening, midday here is hot
How to get there
- West from Kvareli along the road towards Gremi, about fifteen minutes by car
- A few minutes on foot from the Gremi citadel along a dirt road
