The Red Bridge connects Tabidze and Paliashvili streets in central Kutaisi and spans the Rioni River. It is the first iron bridge in the Caucasus: the metal truss span was ordered in France, and the bridge opened to traffic in 1862. It became "red" because of the painted railings and trusses, while its historical official name was Mikhail's Bridge.
From the bridge you can see the wooden houses along the banks of the Rioni, and nearby stands the monument to the poet Galaktion Tabidze with his muse. In spring a magnolia blooms by the bridge, and this is one of the most photographed spots in Kutaisi. In the evening the red illumination switches on. The bridge has cultural heritage monument status, and crossing it is free.
