The museum is devoted to Tbel Abuserisdze, a medieval Georgian scholar of the Adjarian Abuserisdze family. The display covers his legacy and the medieval history of upland Adjara, the monastic book culture and the life of this region in those centuries. The place is known to locals rather than to tourists, and that is part of its value.
The museum stands in Akhalsheni, a village in the Khulo municipality, in upland Adjara above the Adjaristsqali valley. Around it are wooded slopes, terraces and yards scattered across the mountainside. The road climbs in switchbacks, and the views along the way match the destination.
The museum is small and the first half of the day is the easier time to come. Half an hour is enough for the visit. Fold it into a trip through upper Adjara, it is a long way to come on its own.
Tips
- Come in dry weather, the mountain road is harder after rain
- Ask in the village if the museum is closed, someone nearby usually has the key
- Combine the trip with Khulo and the cable car to Tago
How to get there
- From Batumi along the Adjaristsqali valley through Keda and Shuakhevi, about two hours by car
- Minibuses run as far as Khulo, beyond that you need a taxi or a car
