The Mchedlishvili Ethnographic Museum is a family collection of Kakhetian household objects: dishes, textiles, tools, winemaking gear and things handed down within the house. Museums like this grow out of one collection and rest on the people who gathered it. Everything is shown and explained in person, so the visit turns out informal.
The museum stands in Chalaubani, a village in the Gurjaani municipality, among the vineyards of the Alazani valley. Around it are cellars, orchards and the road between Gurjaani and Sighnaghi. The village is small and off the tourist flow.
The museum is open daily from ten in the morning until ten in the evening, a long window that is rare for a village collection. Half an hour is enough. Combine the trip with the wineries of the Gurjaani district.
Tips
- Combine the visit with the local cellars, they are close by
- Ask about the winemaking gear, in Kakheti that is the liveliest subject
- Bring cash, there may be no card terminal
How to get there
- From Gurjaani along the local road, about fifteen minutes by car
- Roughly two hours from Tbilisi via Sagarejo and Gurjaani
