The Sulkhan Chavchavadze House Museum keeps the setting of the house and the objects tied to the name of its owner: furniture, photographs, documents and everyday things. The collection is intimate and its value lies in its wholeness: the rooms stay as they were, with no museum rearrangement. It is shown in person, so the account is lively.
The house stands in Vazisubani, a village in the Gurjaani municipality, in the heart of vineyard Kakheti. The village name is familiar from the wine that carries it, and those very vineyards stretch around. Gurjaani and Telavi are both less than half an hour away.
The house is open daily from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon. Half an hour is enough. A phone number is listed and the visit is worth arranging in advance, especially for a group.
Tips
- Call ahead if you are coming as a group
- Combine the visit with the local cellars, there are plenty around
- Come in September, the village is busy and interesting at harvest time
How to get there
- North from Gurjaani along the local road, about twenty minutes by car
- Roughly half an hour from Telavi via Akhasheni and Vazisubani
