The Giorgi Tatulashvili Ceramics Studio and Museum is a working pottery where part of the space is given over to a collection of finished pieces and old vessels. Work at the wheel is shown here and the craft is explained, so a visit is closer to meeting a maker than to walking past display cases. The pieces can be examined closely and bought.
The studio sits in central Gori on Egnate Ninoshvili street, a few minutes from the main town sights. Gori works well as a base for Shida Kartli: Uplistsikhe and the villages along the Mtkvari are close. The sign is small, so go by the house number.
The studio is open daily from ten in the morning until eight in the evening. Allow half an hour to an hour if you want to watch the wheel. Workshops are arranged in advance by phone.
Tips
- Call ahead if you want to catch the wheel in use
- Ask about the local clay, for potters that is always a subject of its own
- Bring cash if you plan to buy a piece
How to get there
- About ten minutes on foot from the centre of Gori along Egnate Ninoshvili street
- From Tbilisi along the highway via Mtskheta and Kaspi, roughly an hour and a half by car
