The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Saviour, Matskhovris Shoba in Georgian. In Georgia Christmas is marked on the seventh of January, and the main procession of that day, Alilo, moves through the streets of the cities in a column with hymns.
The church stands at the beginning of the main thoroughfare of Gori, and for such a procession the avenue becomes the natural route. The position is advantageous on ordinary days too: a traveller walking from the railway or bus station towards the fortress passes it in any case.
This is a city parish, and on major feast days it is noticeably busier. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf. If you are in Gori at Christmas, step out onto the avenue: Alilo is seen and heard from far off.
