The Great Martyr Barbara, Barbare in Georgian, is widely venerated in Georgia. Her feast, Barbaroba, falls in December and is traditionally marked by baking a special bread, while many households prepare lobiani and sweet gomi porridge that day.
The church stands on the south-eastern edge of the Rustavi agglomeration, where the urban fabric has already ended and the plain of Gardabani Municipality begins. The spot is a border in the most literal sense, between an industrial town and the rural steppe, and the contrast reads straight from the road.
This is an ordinary parish with no tourist infrastructure. Come here as to a place that shows the edge of a large town from its unglamorous side.
