The mosque stands in the rural part of Gardabani Municipality, on the plain by the Kura. It is an ordinary village mosque serving the local community, without annexes or a large courtyard.
Gardabani Municipality lies in the southeast of Kvemo Kartli by the border with Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijanis make up a large share of its population. Mosques are therefore found in most sizeable villages here, and on Fridays they draw large numbers. The landscape is flat: fields, irrigation canals and lines of poplars along the roads.
Shoes are removed at the entrance, which is worth knowing in advance. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- Friday is the busiest time, so plan around it.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
