The Tbilisi Sea: how to get there and what to do?
A reservoir with beaches on the edge of Tbilisi.
Short answer
The Tbilisi Sea is a large reservoir on the city's northeastern edge, created in the 1950s. In summer people come to swim, sunbathe on its beaches and try water sports, and the Chronicle of Georgia monument is nearby. It's about 20-30 minutes by taxi from the centre.
Why
- Swim at equipped beaches with lifeguards.
- The Chronicle of Georgia monument stands on a hill above the reservoir.
- Sunsets here are beautiful, making it a popular evening spot.
Details
On hot summer days the beaches fill up by midday, so come in the morning. Bring water and sunscreen, as there's little shade.
Tip
Combine the trip with the Chronicle of Georgia monument on the nearby hill, ideally at sunset.
What may differ
Swimming is only for summer; early and late in the season the water is cool and beaches empty.
