How can Russian tourists pay in Georgia, and which cards work?

Cash, foreign cards and what changed with money transfers in 2026.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Russian-issued Visa, Mastercard and Mir cards do not work in Georgia, so the simplest option for Russian tourists is to bring cash in dollars, euros or rubles and exchange it for lari. Another option is a card from a bank in another country or a Georgian card, if you have opened one. Russian UnionPay cards sometimes work, but you cannot rely on them.

Why

  1. Because of sanctions, international payment systems do not serve Russian bank cards abroad.
  2. The Mir payment system is not accepted at any terminal or ATM in Georgia.
  3. Visa and Mastercard cards from foreign banks, including Georgian ones, work in shops, cafes and taxis.

Details

You will need cash lari at markets, on minibuses and in small cafes. Some hotels, tours and car rentals can be paid in advance on websites that accept Russian cards. Since July 24, 2026, Zolotaya Korona has stopped sending transfers to Georgia, so you can no longer receive money on the spot this way.

Tip

Work out your budget in advance and bring the full amount in cash with a margin: you will not be able to withdraw money from a Russian card.
