Where is Kazbegi, and what is there to see?
Stepantsminda, Gergeti Church, Mount Kazbek and gorges.
Short answer
Kazbegi is a mountain district in northern Georgia on the Russian border, 150 kilometres from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Road, centred on the town of Stepantsminda. Its highlight is the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church on a hill facing Mount Kazbek, 5,054 metres high. Also worth seeing are the Truso and Juta valleys, Gveleti waterfall and the Dariali gorge.
Why
- Kazbegi is the old name of the town, officially Stepantsminda.
- You can hike up to Gergeti in 1-1.5 hours or go by 4x4.
- From Tbilisi the drive takes about 3 hours with stops at Ananuri and Gudauri.
Details
In winter the road over the Jvari Pass sometimes closes, so check conditions before you go. Even in summer the mountains are cool, so pack warm clothes.
