The Vazha-Pshavela House Museum was founded in 1961 for the centenary of the poet birth. The collection holds memorial objects linked to the life of Luka Razikashvili, ethnographic material from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, editions of his works from different years, paintings, graphics and sculpture on the themes of his poetry, and photographic records. A bronze bust stands in front of the entrance.
The museum is in Chargali, the poet home village in Pshavi, on the slopes above the valley. His father house, built by the village priest Pavle Razikashvili, was restored in 1976, and in 1987 an exhibition building with a repository was added beside it. Around it lies an ordinary mountain village of stone walls, orchards and ridge views.
In a mountain village the schedule depends on the season, so it is easier to arrange the visit in advance. Allow about an hour for the family house and the exhibition building. The drive takes longer than the visit itself, so plan half a day.
Tips
- Come in dry weather, the climb to the village is easier with four wheel drive
- Read at least one of his poems beforehand, the house reads differently after that
- Contact the museum a day ahead, in winter it may be closed
How to get there
- From Tbilisi via Mtskheta and Dusheti, then the mountain road towards Pshavi, about two and a half hours
- Public transport to Chargali is irregular, a car or a taxi from Dusheti is easier
