The Cathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in Dedoplistskaro, the administrative center of the municipality of the same name on the Iori Plateau. It is the cathedral of the Khornabuji and Hereti Diocese of the Georgian Orthodox Church: the see is located in the town, and the bishop's residence is in Khornabuji.
The structure is modern; reference sources date it to 2005. Among the low-rise buildings, the cathedral is visible from afar, and visitors often describe it as the main attraction of Dedoplistskaro.
The town itself is older than it appears. It has been mentioned since the 11th century, known in Russian documents as Tsarskie Kolodtsi (Royal Wells). During the Soviet era, it was called Tsiteli-Tskaro, and its current name translates as Tsarina's Springs.
