The house museum is devoted to Akaki Shanidze, the linguist whose work on Georgian grammar and early texts became the foundation of Kartvelian studies as a discipline. The house keeps the setting, the books, the manuscripts, the documents and the photographs. The collection is rural in scale and academic in substance, and for philologists it is one of the key stops in Guria.
The house stands in Kvemo Nogha, a village in the Chokhatauri municipality, in the foothills of Guria. Around it are wooded slopes, tea plantations and the road running towards Bakhmaro. The village is small and quiet.
The house is small and half an hour is enough. The first half of the day is the easier time, and it is better to arrange the visit through the village in advance. Combine the trip with Chokhatauri and the Marr museum in Bukistsikhe.
Tips
- Combine the visit with the Niko Marr museum in Bukistsikhe nearby
- Ask about the manuscripts and editions, the core subject here
- Come in dry weather, the foothill roads are harder after rain
How to get there
- From Chokhatauri along the local road, about twenty minutes by car
- Roughly forty minutes from Ozurgeti via Chokhatauri
