The church is dedicated to St. Gabriel Urgebadze, a Georgian saint of the twentieth century whose veneration is very wide in the country. Churches of his name keep appearing, and this is one of the younger ones.
The village of Khatisopeli lies east of Bolnisi, in the hills of Kvemo Kartli. Its name translates as the village of the icon: khati means icon and sopeli means village. Such a toponym next to a church of St. Gabriel feels logical, although the village name is clearly older than the church.
The parish is active and notably lively: the community runs a social media page and answers visitors willingly. Covering clothing is expected, with a headscarf for women entering the church. Service times are best checked in advance.
