In a picturesque place of Borjomi district, in the village of Sadgeri, there is the Church of St. George, one of the most beautiful places in Georgia above the Borjomula River.
The temple in the village of Sadgeri in honor of St. George was first built in the 7th century. In the 15th century it was destroyed and in the 19th it was restored again. At one time, one of the most important sights of Georgia, the Sadgeri Golden Cross, was kept in the Church of St. George in Sadgeri. At the moment, he is in the gold fund, in Tbilisi.
The sights of Georgia amaze with their antiquity. Here you can see temples built in the VII century, which was destroyed in the XV century, and restored in the XIX. You can enjoy this architecture in the Samtskhe-Javakheti area, in the village of Sadgeri in the Borjomi region.
The Sadgeri Church of St. George stands above the Borjomula River. This is a hall temple without an altar ledge, with a semicircular overlap with an uneven outline. The building is built of hewn stone of gray color. The seams between them are covered with a dense layer of the mixture, which creates the appearance of a frame around each stone.
Facades and openings are decorated with curved platbands. You can enter the temple from two sides - western and northern - through doors with a double curved rectangular fragment and curving portals.
Each portal in the opening has a sculptural drawing of a cross, and at the top there are rectangular windows framed by a triple winding shaft and decorated with a relief of grape tassels. Windows from the east are also decorated. The rest are arched and unadorned.
If you are looking for that view in Borjomi area, then this architectural monument will definitely amaze you with its greatness. Its walls leading along the temple are divided by pilasters, and its vault is divided by arches. The temple itself stands on a three-stage plinth.
Various sculptural images are randomly placed on the facades of the temple. At the northern entrance, in a semicircular twisted frame, there is an image of a dragon defeated by St. George. There is also a picture with a story about Saint Eustace giving a bow to a deer.
On the walls on the west side there are reliefs about the Caucasian tour, which is chained in dragon chains, and about the feat of St. George. Inside the temple was reconstructed and plastered. The roof of the church has also been updated, but its original slope is still visible. Cornices remained from those times.
Around the church there was and is a strong wall with locks made of the same stone as the building. Now the Church of St. George in the village of Sadgeri is an active monastery. Previously, there was a “Sadgersky Golden Cross” on savings here. Nowadays it is kept in the Tbilisi gold fund.
How to get
