Strategically important places in Georgia. Visit Gori Fortress.
If you love history and want to touch it a little, then be sure to visit the Gori fortress, which stands on a small hill. From this hill there is a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings, as well as the picturesque landscapes of Georgia. At one time, the fortress was a very important strategic object, only an earthquake could damage it. But despite this, thanks to the restoration, it has been preserved in good condition to this day.
The Italian missionary Cristoforo de Castelli came to Georgia in 1628 and lived here for 26 years. He wrote the most valuable information about the life and condition of Georgia during this period. From these notes we learn that most of the fortress that has survived to our time was built in the XVII century, during the reign of the last representative of the Kartli Bagrations – Tsar Rostom.
In downtown Burn, at the mouth of the Liakhvi and Medzhuda rivers, on a hill stands Gori Fortress. From this place, the whole city and its surroundings are clearly visible.
For centuries, the Gori fortress was the most important strategic object — the possession of the fortress meant the political subordination of the whole Kartli. That is why, throughout its existence, even after 1801, when the Russian Empire abolished the Kartl-Kakheti Kingdom, the fortress retained its importance.
In historical sources, it was first mentioned in the writings of the chronicler Juansher in connection with the events of the VII century. The sources of the late Middle Ages say that the fortress has repeatedly undergone restoration and renovation. The appearance that exists now, the fortress acquired as a result of grandiose reconstruction works in 1774, during the reign of Heraclius II.
The Gori fortress consists of a citadel on the upper plateau (180 x40 m) and the fortress "Tskhrakara" on the eastern slope. It is built of cobblestones and rubble stones, which are sometimes replaced by hewn stones and bricks. The fence is 2 meters thick and 10 meters high. The comparatively better preserved fortress "Tskhrakara" consists of seven unequal parts, These parts are separated from each other by parallel load-bearing walls and are interconnected by passages. The fence stretches along the perimeter of the slope and forms a semicircle at the end.
In February 1920, a strong earthquake occurred in Gori, which significantly damaged both the fortress itself and the small church of the zal type (XI-XII centuries), which was located in the eastern part of the citadel. In 1951-1955, Gori fortresses carried out large-scale restoration work.
These works helped to restore the appearance of the building and preserve the ancient history to the present day. In general, this desire of Georgians to preserve the memory of their ancestors has contributed to the fact that historical sights are located everywhere on its territory, which have no equal in the whole world.
