In order to protect Tusheti alpine meadows and pristine coniferous forests as well as snow-covered peaks, the Tusheti Protected Area was established in 2003, which includes a state reserve (12627.2 ha), Tusheti National Park (69515 ha) and the Tusheti Protected Landscape (31518 ha). This is the largest protected area in Europe.
Diverse natural conditions of Tusheti - vertical girdle and well-defined natural barriers determine both the diversity of fauna and endemicity of common species. Among the flora distributed here, 11 species are endemic to Georgia and 230 species are endemic to the Caucasus.
These species are included in the "Red Book" of Georgia and international organizations. You won't find such forests in Tusheti anywhere else in the world: mixed forests with birches and conifers covered with subalpine herbaceous plants, forests with lindens and birches, pine forests with rhododendrons.
Pine trees in Tusheti occur at an altitude of 2,700 m above sea level, which is a unique case in the Caucasus. Among endemic species of fauna are the Caucasian capercaillie, Caucasian snow grouse and the East Caucasian ibex. The Tusheti Protected Landscape encompasses Tusheti villages as well as shepherd dwellings located in the valley of the Pirikitis Alazani River and its tributaries and in the areas adjacent to this valley, as well as on the northern slopes of the main Caucasus Range and near Mount Diklo.
The purpose of creating such a landscape was to preserve the traditional appearance of Tushino villages, as well as to protect them from the damage caused by the development of tourism and various economic sectors.

А всё потому, что здесь растут альпийские луга, смешанные леса с берёзами и хвойными деревьями, леса с липами и берёзами, сосновые леса. Сосна в Тушети встречается даже на высоте 2700 м над уровнем моря!!! Это очень интересный факт для Кавказа!
Целью создания такого ландшафта было сохранение традиционного вида тушинских деревень, а также защита от ущерба, вызванного развитием туризма и различных хозяйственных отраслей.
