The old fortress of Hornabuji is located on a high mountain, which offers a beautiful view of the natural surroundings. The fortress received significant damage at the end of the thirteenth century, when it suffered from the invasion of the Mongols. In the seventies of the twentieth century, scientists here discovered materials dating back to the first century BC.

In 1858, Alexander Dumas traveled to the Caucasus, who, along with other sights of Georgia, examined the fortress Hornabuji,The French writer admired the greatness of this fortress. Hungarian artist Mihai Zici, creating illustrations for the poem "Knight in Tiger Skin" used Hornabuji for the image of the Cadet Castle.

Along with Ujarma and Cheremi, Khornabuji was a specific fortress city and for centuries the main city of the historical region of Georgia — Kambechovani. The city was founded by King Bakur at the end of the IV century. In the VIII century, Assam and Varazvard Bagrationi expelled the Persians who dominated there from the fortress and the country. It was one of the first appearances on the historical arena of representatives of the Bagrationi dynasty — Georgian kings.
According to the chroniclers, the rulers of Khornabuja were distinguished by a cool disposition and had great influence throughout the region.
The fortress stands on a high rocky mountain and consists of a citadel and a treasury building. There are many rooms in the inner fortress, which are interconnected by narrow steep stairs. There were two reservoirs in the middle and upper parts of the fortress. In the lower courtyard, the ruins of the gate and the wall have been preserved, which was rebuilt in the subsequent period – after the spread of firearms. Loopholes and special benches for rifle stands were installed in the wall.
At the end of the XIII century, as a result of the invasions of the Mongol horde, the fortress was significantly damaged. Since that time, the city of Khornabuji has been in decline: not only the economic situation, but also the demographic situation is deteriorating. The administrative center of this region has moved from Hornabuji to Kiziki (Signagi).
In 1970, archaeological excavations were carried out in Khornabuji, as a result of which numerous materials were discovered dating back to the periods from the first millennium BC to the late Middle Ages.
