The history of the Zoo in Tbilisi
The foundation of the park falls on 1927. In the lowlands of the Vera River, 70 hectares of land were allocated for the construction of this facility. G. A. Hanson was appointed the first director of the park. Initially, the zoo had departments of the Caucasus and local history, the fauna of the former USSR, exotic animals, domestic animals for agriculture, etc. were presented. And already in 1931, a laboratory of parasitology and a museum of zoology were created in the park. A little later, in 1935, I. Jandieri supervised the opening of a biological station at the zoo, which was later transferred to the ownership of Tbilisi State University.
Such scientists as I. Jandieri, D. Agladze, M. Rcheulishvili, S. Erkomaishvili and others carried out work in the zoological park. For example, I. Beritashvili together with N. Dzidzishvili studied the psyche of monkeys and their other features. Many discoveries in science were made by the zoo during the 10 years of work of Director G. Ganson in the period from 1934 to 1944.
The Tbilisi Zoo has experienced many significant changes throughout its history, as well as increased the number and diversity of animal species. Currently, the park has such departments as: birds, predators, primates, ungulates park, an exotarium with amphibians, reptiles and rare fish, and among other things, an educational center for children.
The first marine aquarium in the whole Caucasus was opened in the Tbilisi Zoo in 2007. In 2015, on the night of June 13, a real tragedy happened in the zoo, during heavy rains, the Vera River overflowed very much and destroyed the entire lower part of the Tbilisi Park. The animals escaped from the enclosures in a panic, many of them died, some were caught in Tbilisi. Some of the animals suffered at the hands of employees of the local Ministry of Internal Affairs, although, according to the director, this was not necessary. Unfortunately, three zoo workers also died while rescuing animals.
Then, thanks to the help of caring people, the zoo recovered three months after the disaster and started working on September 13, 2015.
