The Shavla Amiranashvili Museum not only looks large-scale from the outside, but also inside keeps the richest collections, the total number of exhibits has already exceeded forty thousand! In the golden fund of the museum you can find unique samples: medieval icons, the world's largest collection of cloisonne enamel, valuable samples of sculpture and painting.
The beginning of the museum of art values dates back to the second half of the XIX century, although the official year of foundation of the museum is 1920. The author of the building is the Italian architect Giuseppe Berdardachi, who was invited to Georgia by philanthropist and entrepreneur Yakov Zubalashvili.
The museum has collections from the Literacy Society, Georgian church and historical and ethnographic museums, the National Gallery, the Museum of Ancient Georgian Art, and the Metekhi Museum. The treasure that was temporarily taken by the Menshevik government to France in 1921 and then returned to the homeland in 1945 is also preserved here. The total number of exhibits exceeds 40 thousand.
In the stationary exposition of the museum are mainly samples of art, ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day. Particular attention is paid to the unique heritage of the world - the exposition of the "Gold Fund", which covers a vast chronological range from VII century BC to XIX century AD and contains over 500 exhibits.
The museum's Golden Fund collection contains unique examples of Georgian art: medieval icons, including the miraculous icon "Anchiskhati" and a masterpiece from the era of King David Agmashenebeli (the Builder) - "Khakhuli Triptych".
The museum has the largest collection of cloisonne enamel in the world. There are also valuable works of easel painting and chamber sculpture by Georgian artists, including the most comprehensive collection of works by the genius self-taught Georgian painter Niko Pirosmani from the early 20th century. The museum is also rich in examples of Western European art. Among them are paintings by Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach.
The Eastern collection of the museum is noteworthy, including unique carpets and tapestries.
