Ilia Chavchavadze, the leading figure of Georgian liberal noble literature, a poet, novelist, translator, publicist, and enlightener, led Georgia's national liberation movement. Saguramo wasn't his ancestral estate, he built the house here as an adult, on the property of his wife, Olga Guramishvili.

Ilia built the fine mansion in Saguramo in 1895. The complex included the main house, outbuildings, a manager's house, and a wine cellar, along with a park, garden, and vineyard. He spent much of his later life here, and this is where he worked.

📜 From Family Home to Museum
After Ilia Chavchavadze was assassinated in 1907, his wife Olga Guramishvili gave the house to the Society for the Spread of Literacy Among Georgians, the very organisation Ilia himself had founded. In the 1930s, the building served a different purpose entirely: a retreat for writers and artists of Soviet Georgia.
The estate only gained museum status in 1951, on the initiative of poet and scholar Giorgi Leonidze. In 2018, by decree of the Georgian government, the Saguramo museum, together with the writer's second memorial museum in Kvareli, was recognised as a national cultural heritage monument.

The exhibition includes the writer's personal belongings, manuscripts, artworks, rare books, and documents, offering a close look at his life and work.
